And if you say you didn’t, either you were raised at an Amish farm, or are just plain lying… These days, kids are more likely to learn about sex from the Internet than from an underground magazine like the ones some classmates used to sneak in into school. But for the same reason Bill Watterson said once that he drew old fashioned appliances on his strips because they looked more fun, the act of hiding (or rather, pretending to hide) a porno magazine under a convoluted blanket contraption has more comical potential than gazing mindlessly at a computer like you are doing at this moment :)

I don’t get to do full color illustrations (click on image at left to view) like this often, because I never seem to have time for them and the method I use is quite time-consuming (I’m absolutely interested on learning speedy Photoshop coloring methods). Thanks to a few slow days at work courtesy of the holidays, I’ve been able to accomplish one, and this also is the very first time I attempt to color a night scene. Hope I didn’t fare too bad. Comments are welcome!

Maya Delmont - Portrait

It has been ages since I last attempted to create realistic portrait sketches. Fortunately, it seems that I haven’t completely lost it — it feels good to know you can draw something else besides stick figures.

I chose Maya, the daughter of longtime friend Sebastian Delmont, as the subject for this first realistic sketch. Hope I can make others in the future and improve over time.

Express yourself

This is something I meant to do since a good while ago. This is part of a meme on art community site DeviantArt, where you download this sheet and give a shot at portraying a character of yours across the 25 most common expressions. Needless to say this was a great practice for me, in my current process of un-rusting my drawing skills. I also realized that I definitely suck at inking using the Wacom tablet - there’s no way I can draw a pretty, continous line using the damn thing. I’ll probably stick to use it only for coloring until I can afford a Cintiq.

Done using a Wacom tablet and Sketchbook Pro.

It’s A Passion

According to the Argentine soccer calendar, next Sunday we’ll be off to a clash of titans - The classic match of the two top country teams, River Plate vs. Boca Juniors will take place. Few countries in the world celebrate soccer as intensely and passionately as Argentina.

Following on the celebration of the characters of Argentine animation master Mr. García Ferré (see earlier entries here and here), I thought of depicting Anteojito (left) and Hijitus (right) about to start this match as a cover idea for a related mailing list I’m on. Here’s also Oaky, the born-rich baby that somehow gets around with no legs, acting as the referee.

Done entirely on Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.

A Special Birthday

See those nice rascals over there? For many Latinamerican kids of my generation (and even further than that) these were the imaginary friends of our youth. While on my recent trip to Argentina, I was blessed enough to have the golden chance to meet their creator, Mr. Manuel Garcia Ferré, even if for a short while. Imagine meeting your favorite rock star or TV celebrity out of the blue — that pretty much illustrates what it meant to me.

It just happens that today is Mr. Ferré’s birthday. He’s 79 and still pretty active commanding the media empire that his creations, motion pictures, and millions of kids built - Anteojito, the kid with the oversized spectacles and his uncle Antifaz - the guy with the eternal Zorro-style mask; Pi-Pio, the cowboy chicken of the Far West; Larguirucho, the undefined creature that constantly swings between good and evil, and of course Hijitus, the kid with the magical hat, or sombreritus, which turns him into a powerful superhero when the need arises.

So it was just fitting to quickly put together a humble, but really heartfelt birthday gift to him on this date. Happy birthday from us all, don Manuel!

Southbound

Unless something unexpected happens with the Large Hadron Collider that sends us to the netherworld, I’m about to visit Argentina and meet some friends during the second half of September. Thought it would be funny to throw up a quick* doodle to “commemorate” the event. And so here we have beloved and longstanding Argentinian characters (L. to. R): Larguirucho (literally, “Longish guy”), Hijitus and Anteojito (”Small Glasses” — sort of ironic name considering the size of those spectacles) helping our friends to get along the streets of Buenos Aires.

These characters -and many others- were created by the extremely creative mind of Manuel García Ferré, a Spaniard who moved to Argentina in the mid-1940s, created an educational entertainment emporium and from who there is terribly too few information in English to even bother linking; you will have much better luck if you know enough Spanish to search around.

*Thinking these things up is quick; adding color and lines to it is not, and I keep forgetting of that every time. You probably won’t see these too often on this site - I’ll mostly stick to simpler sketches. Done almost entirely on Sketchbook Pro with a few little touches in Photoshop.

Dan’s Lucky Move

An overconfident Daniel goes ahead, leaves all fears behind and makes the move that separates the men from the boys. Will he get lucky?

This was a chance to try some custom brushes I made for Illustrator to try emulate a real ink brushstroke, in the style of Walt Kelly / Jeff Smith, which I feel I’m very close to. I think I still prefer a real brush.

I’m still trying to find which are the most suitable tools for my drawing style. This is one more of my attempts at digital inking. I’m not very pleased how the facial expressions came out on this one… oh well, it’s all part of the quest. The search goes on. Used mostly Photoshop in here.

I don’t really think much about naming my sketches, it’s not like they are big works of art or anything… anyways, while doing this I thought on the name Toby to christen this little fella who looks like he’s waiting for other friends for a match… Done almost completely on Sketchbook Pro 2 with a few touches on Photoshop.
